Ministry of Health closes Succotz physiotherapy clinic

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness says it has closed the private physical therapy clinic Physio Therapy European, located in San Jose Succotz, Cayo District, after its founder was found to apparently be improperly operating.

In a statement, the Ministry said its Licensing and Accreditation Unit and other relevant ministries were reviewing the application of owner Oscar Samayoa to work in the capacity of a physical therapist, but he has not yet been fully authorized or licensed to so operate.

Further, it says, Samayoa is not a medical doctor and so is not authorized to offer any medical consultation or treatment that includes antibiotics, pain killers and medications that are to be administered either via IV/IM; nor is he authorized to prescribe medicine sold by any pharmacy. Furthermore, says the Ministry, persons who have received services and have been affected in any way by the facility or the owner in this capacity, are encouraged to report it to the ministry.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness understands that the closure of the clinic may impact clients and the community of Succotz, however, the ministry also has a duty to share safeguard the health of the population by sharing its initial findings and continuing to keep the public informed of any new developments.

Reached this afternoon, Samayoa told us by telephone that he had been in operation since 2018 but denied prescribing medicine or similar treatments. He said he believed there had been a misunderstanding by the Ministry and offered to show us the proof of his bona fides in person.
