By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Zacharias Palacio Diabetes Center is officially being opened in Belmopan on Friday morning.
The Zacharias-Palacio Diabetes Center is the first diabetes center in the Capital and it is being launched at the American Northwest University.
“Million thanks to Dr. [Mohammad] Khamis, owner of Northwest University,” said Mayor Palacio.
The Zacharias-Palacio Diabetes Center is a dream come true for Mayor Palacio, who said the launching of the first diabetes center “will be a historic day in the nation’s capital”.
“Through this center Belmopan diabetics will have better access to diabetes care and diabetes advocates will have better access to summits,” she said.
“Diabetes is an issue,” Mayor Palacio said. “It’s a chronic, non-communicable disease that is affecting so many persons. Our mission, Youth for World Peace, is to spread awareness that diabetes with proper lifestyle, changing bad habits, and so on and so on, can make a difference. Exercise is fundamental.”
Palacio has extensive knowledge of Diabetes and knows firsthand what is needed as diabetes and Palacio blood are synonymous, she says. Not only does she recall taking her diabetic father to Cuba for him to learn the basics of the disease, but she’s also devastated that her diabetic brother Fulton Barry almost lost his foot last year due what she says was gross negligence at the Belmopan Hospital.
Mayor Palacio said she will continue advocating for all Belmopan diabetics and eventually diabetics countrywide.
