Opposition Leader backs investment summit, criticizes COVID response

By Aaron Humes: In another time and place, he might have been in the shoes of John Briceño last week. But Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber says he’s always willing to be a team player if Belize benefits.

Faber told reporters that in addition to being the Government’s toughest critics, the Loyal Opposition must be ready to stand for Belize in moments of plenty.

“I hope that we are a team player, that we are a partner in helping to get things rebound in Belize’s economy, and clearly an event like this is a very costly one, and those criticisms will come, I am sure. But, we believe that if this kind of investment will yield the kind of productivity, the kind of investment that the government is hoping to achieve here, then it might be all worth it.”

One area of cooperation is on COVID regulations, where the Opposition is demanding more inclusiveness in the Government’s plans.

Faber says more needs to be done on supplying hospitals with necessary items, reducing “profiteering” from testing: “We hear about people dying because they cannot afford the expensive medications that can save lives. So, we absolutely say that government needs to do more and to go back to your original point, it needs to be inclusive of everybody, including the Opposition, in this fight against COVID-19 that we are failing.”
