Breaking Belize News’ own Aaron Humes awarded for outstanding crime reporting

By Benjamin Flowers: Breaking Belize News’s own Aaron Humes is one of the 2021 recipients of the Belize Crime Observatory’s Media Awards for Excellence in Crime reporting.

Humes was one of several journalists who participated in the Crime Data Reporting Workshop, hosted by the Belize Crime Observatory in March 2020, with sponsorship from USAID and support from UNDP, through the Infosegura Project.

The awards, which are a follow-up to that project, were designed to promote excellence in crime reporting by inspiring positive change through stories that address the root causes of crime and their associated issues.

Humes, a media practitioner for almost 15 years, earned the BCO Choice Award: Best Online Coverage. Speaking on the recognition, he said that he is pleased with the recognition, but focuses more on the work of journalism, which is his passion.

“Just doing something I love to do. I’m familiar with all kinds of stories and I never know when I wake up in the morning what my day will be like, all I know is that I will enjoy it more than anything else I could be doing.

He joins fellow awardees Andrea Polanco from Channel 5 and Courtney Menzies from Channel 7.
