Opposition Senator Michael Peyrefitte: ‘Kareem, Kevin have failed and must go now!’

By Aaron Humes: It has now been a year, and having failed to provide the solutions he promised, the Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa and his CEO Kevin Arthurs must step down, demanded lead Opposition Senator Michael Peyrefitte.

Police morale is at an all-time low and the victims are getting younger – Belize is still the “lawless state” Musa himself said it was two years ago.

As for the recent drug plane landing, Peyrefitte charged that if in similar cases it was true that Ministers of the then administration had to be aware of, if not facilitating, these landings, then who in Belmopan are behind this one?

Through September there have been 22 percent more murders – 90 this year compared to 74 last year (when, granted, there were multiple states of emergency and lockdowns).

Even the quietest corner of the country, Toledo, has seen a rise in crime.

The Government should have been implementing ideas such as an independent commission overseeing police, and a succession plan to address vacancies like the one opened up at Deputy Commissioner.

It all points to a lack of leadership, which has given the criminals free reign.

And as for tackling the root cause of crime, it can hardly help to cut police officers, other public officers, and teachers’ salaries, fail to pass amendments to the minimum wage, and allowing increases in the cost of living, thereby increasing both poverty and crime, Peyrefitte noted.
