UDP: ‘Time to truly address COVID-19 crisis’

Posted: Tuesday, November 16, 2021. 10:34 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: With the country on track to lose more than 50 Belizeans already this month, it is time to acknowledge the COVID-19 crisis, Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber states.

Who is enforcing the current regulations among society regarding mask-wearing, social distancing, and handwashing, Faber asked? Apparently no one – not the Government, nor residents. Both must take this more seriously, Faber said.

On vaccination, Faber called for a full-out aggressive push for vaccination, even for five to 12-year-olds now that the Pfizer vaccine is available and approved in the United States.

The Government should provide incentives to get vaccinated and provide groceries for those who are sick.

There is an interconnection between illness and loss of jobs and an increase in fear, depression, and crime.

The Opposition says there can be no excuse for providing needed life-saving medications. Faber related the story of a supporter from the South who asked for the cocktail of medications that helped Faber’s mother recover – but it costs around 10 thousand dollars.

He insisted that we can cut down on the number of daily deaths by paying for these medications rather than, for instance, paying for the 30-person entourage for the recent meetings in Glasgow, Scotland for COP26. The absence of these medications is due to “politics” and is endangering individuals’ health and lives.
