By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Belize really is the land of opportunity, and I can assure you that now is the best time to invest,” said Minister of Youth, Sports and E-Governance Kevin Bernard at the 6th Annual Florida International Trade and Cultural Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Addressing the ‘Doing Business with World: the Caribbean’ segment of the Expo, Bernard said the Belize Government has committed to doing all in its power to enhance the ease of doing business in the country.
“All is already being set in place. We are serious about good investment, investments which will be good for you, and good for us. I invite you to take a trip to Belize, and I can promise that you will not be disappointed,” Bernard said echoing the Government’s pitch at the recently held Belize Investment Summit.
“The Summit was an opportunity for investors to explore the rich potential of a country which is strategically placed in both Central America and the Caribbean, with ready access to North America, Europe, Asia and the world,” said Bernard..
He went to talk about Belize’s resiliency in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and how Belize is recovering from its blow.
“The Summit was the phoenix rising from the ashes, a proverbial throwing open the doors after a storm, a signal to all that our small but bountiful nation is open for business once again,” he said.
“Today, I want to send the same message to this gathering of business stakeholders and investors from Florida and the world – Belize is open for business and is a ripe opportunity for those interested in sound investment in what is practically virgin territory,” said Bernard.
Extolling Belize’s virtues, Bernard spoke about the largest barrier reef in the Hemisphere, the Blue Hole, the best fishing, diving, and snorkeling in the world. But added that apart from tourism, in Belize “there is ample room for much more investment”.
Bernard said that “if Covid taught us nothing else, it taught us resilience in the face of unprecedented challenge, and it taught us to seize the day”.
As was exposed at the Belize Investment Summit, Minister Bernard again spoke about his called E-Governance Ministry which is paving the way to improve the ease of doing business with Belize by passing legislation which strengthens our financial systems and protect the investors’ money.
“We have the access to international markets, multi-lateral and bi-lateral free trade agreements, investment treaties and economic partnerships with Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, Asia, the US and the United Arab Emirates,” said Bernard in his pitch to garner more investment for Belize.
He went on to speak of the opportunities available in agribusiness – sugar, citrus, bananas, grains, spices, cotton; fishing and aquaculture industry – conch, lobster and shrimp; while our marine environment is proving to be perfect for the harvesting of seaweed and sea cucumbers.
“We have it all, my friends – Eco-tourism, adventure and cultural tourism, medical tourism, information technology outsourcing,” he said.
“I invite you to seize the day in Belize, a country unlike any other, with opportunities unlike any others. We are open for business, my friends. We’ll see you soon,” closed Minister Bernard.
