By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Canada recorded a memorable 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Concacaf Octagonal qualifying tournament to Final Qatar 2022 and jumped over Mexico and the United States into the top spot. The win was Canada’s first against Mexico in more than 45 years of World Cup qualifying games.

Canada now have 16 points, one more than the United States (15) and two more than Mexico (14).

Panama beat El Salvador 2-1 and kept pace with Mexico.

Costa Rica also kept their hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Honduras while Jamaica shocked the US with a 1-1 in Kingston.

Panama are in 4th place with 14 points, like Mexico. Costa Rica are 5th with nine points. Jamaica follow with seven, El Salvador are next with six, and Honduras are at the bottom with only three points.

Three Concacaf teams qualify directly to Qatar 2022 while the fourth-place team goes to an inter-continental playoff.

Qualifying resumes on January 27 when the United States play at home against El Salvador and Jamaica do likewise against Mexico.
