Man says maskless police officers charged him for not wearing his mask properly

By BBN Staff: A Belize City resident is furious after he was charged for not wearing his mask properly by police officers who he claims weren’t even wearing masks.

Twenty-five-ear-old Godfrey Arnold was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where he was read a single charge of failure to wear a face mask properly to which he pleaded guilty.

Arnold told the magistrate that he was at a shop buying while talking to someone and the mask kept slipping off his nose. He said that the mask had slipped down at the same time the unmasked officers entered the shop and decided to charge him. The Magistrate explained that, notwithstanding the officers should have been wearing masks, he had still committed an offense.

Arnold was fined $500; however, the magistrate explained that he would be spared the additional $150 fine because he pleaded guilty right away and did not waste the court’s time.

Arnold has until January 31, 2022, to pay the fine or face 5 months in jail.
