By Aaron Humes: Commander of Operations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Alford Grinage, has confirmed the discovery of a kilo of suspected cocaine in a vehicle being driven near North Ring Road and Power Lane in Belmopan.
But he added that police have verified that the package is differently marked from that of the parcels recovered from the Bladen drug bust two weeks ago, and that in any event only the samples to be used as evidence remain from that far larger bust, the rest of which was destroyed this week.
The bust was made yesterday afternoon just before 5 p.m. and one man, former Police Sergeant Hilbert Castillo, was taken into custody and has been charged for possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply. He has been remanded pending bail until next February 18, 2022.
Former Sergeant Castillo had previously dropped off his friend, the now-retired Commandant of the Police Training Academy, at the school yesterday evening. This obliged police to search the former Commandant’s residence on the Academy grounds, but nothing illegal was found.
ACP Grinage established that the accused was a solid officer during his time in the Department, which he left five years ago, and was not known to be involved in drug trafficking.
But how he did get the drugs? ACP Grinage is clear that he could not have gotten the drugs from the Academy grounds where samples are stored, and he only stayed long enough to drop off his friend, the retired Commandant. And of course, had there been, all involved would be arrested. And the group cooperated with the officers who conducted the search and the K-9 dogs found nothing.
The Assistant Commissioner noted that the markings on the parcel are similar to those from a drug plane that crashed in the sea near Placencia a few months ago, but could not be sure if this parcel was part of that cargo.
