By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Stann Creek District Department of Agriculture Station now has a seedling nursery and a research unit at Hope Creek.
“The Stann Creek District station at Hope Creek now has its own covered structure demonstration and research unit and a 9,000-plant capacity seedling nursery, similar to that of Yo Creek and Sandhill Stations,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise.
The next move will be to set up a nursery in Toledo said MAFSE.
The nurseries at Yo Creek, Sandhill, and Hope Creek are a move to decentralize the distribution of seedlings from MAFSE main distributing center at Central Farm in Cayo.
“One component of the ministry’s intervention is the decentralization of the protective seedling nursery capacity to our district stations including Stann Creek where the hope is farmers will use this opportunity to improve their production practices thereby maximize yield and incoming generation,” said Gary Ramirez, National Program Coordinator for Horticulture.
“The Blue Creek nursery will be expected to produce an assortment of vegetable seedlings, cabbage, tomato, sweet pepper but given the fact that the Marie Sharp market is in their area, an emphasis on Hot pepper will be key,” said Ramirez.
Marie Sharpe Fine Foods has indicated that it has an annual demand of 1 million pounds of hot pepper.
