Opposition Leader chronicles trials and triumphs of the Garinagu people in Settlement Day message

By BBN Staff: In honor of the 2021 celebration of Garifuna Settlement Day, Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber’s address today served as a reminder to the great trials the Garinagu people faced in their history, as well as the great resilience they displayed to overcome those trials.

Faber’s address, which began with the 1802 Garifuna Matriarch Gulisi, gave a detailed account of how the 2021 theme of Garifuna Settlement Day “I FOR YOU, YOU FOR ME” was truly a mantra of the people for their entire existence.

From their brutal military defeat and exile from St. Vincent by the British in 1797, to the 1823 arrival of Alejo Beni and his followers, and the years spent in colonial Belize making contributions to the country we now live in, Faber emphasized that the motto “I FOR YOU, YOU FOR ME” should not only be admired but emulated.

“While we immerse ourselves in the countless contributions they have made to Belize’s growth as a proud, independent nation, let us not just preach about “I for you, you for me.” Especially in these trying times, just like Gulisi, Beni, and T.V. [Thomas Vincent] Ramos did, let us PRACTICE it every day,” Faber said. “Therefore, in embracing and thanking our Garifuna sisters and brothers on this, their special day and always, let us truly honor them and our nation as a whole by living up to “I for you, you for me.” Let this not be only the Garifuna way forward, but a national value and strategy to move our beloved Belize forward. ”
