By Aaron Humes: A bit of history was made in Washington on Friday – for about 85 minutes, a woman served as President of the United States.
Per Yahoo News, Joe Biden under the authority of the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution transferred power to incumbent vice-president Kamala Harris in order to take a physical exam and colonoscopy, the latter under anesthesia.
While Biden, 78, was at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Harris worked from her West Wing office between 10:10 a.m. and 11:35 a.m., at which time Biden came out of sedation Later, Harris traveled from Washington, D.C., to Columbus, Ohio, where she was scheduled to give remarks promoting the bipartisan infrastructure deal that Biden signed into law earlier this week.
No woman has ever been elected President, former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton having come closest in 2016, while Harris is the first woman elected Vice-President.
Biden completed his physical exam later on.
Previous transitions have ironically occurred under father and son George H.W. and George W. Bush – the former delegated to Dick Cheney twice in his eight years in office, while the latter held the reins under Ronald Reagan in 1985. The 25th Amendment was first ratified in 1967. However, there were claims that when former President Donald Trump made a surprise visit to Walter Reed in 2019 it was for a similar procedure, but he refused to make the transfer to Vice President Mike Pence, allegedly because he didn’t want to be made fun of by late night TV hosts.
