Belize sends a delegation of athletes to the first Junior Pan American Games in Colombia

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) announced today that a total delegation of 17 was sent to the first edition of the Junior Pan American Games that is set to take place in Cali, Colombia from November 25-December 5, 2021.

The first group including canoe, judo, triathlon, and athletics left from the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA)today. On November 26, the second group- athletics, tennis, and beach volleyball, will depart, while the third group including cycling, karate, and sailing will be leaving on November 28. Some groups will have to overnight on their journey to and from Cali.

The delegation includes five officials and 12 athletes who will be competing in nine different sporting disciplines. The athletes include: Athletics- Hilary Gladden (100m); Gary Neal (400m); Canoe sprint- Andres Cabb (k1 200m & k2 1000m); Javier Guardado (k1 1000m & k2 1000m); Cycling- Joshua Fuller (road race and time trial); Judo- Ishmael Castro (under 90 kg); Karate- Shyheim Tablada (under 67 kg); Sailing- Devaughn Morrison (1 person Dinghy); Tennis- Blake Lee; Triathlon- Giovanni Alamilla II; Beach Volleyball- Ernest Broaster, Wilder Martinez.

Officials leading the delegation include Chief of Mission, Mr. Deon Sutherland. Other officials are Giovanni Alamilla of Triathlon, Keith Hardwick of Sailing, Robert Lee of Tennis, and Elvin Penner of Canoe.

The BOCGA noted that there are strict protocols in place at the games to prevent the possible spread of COVID-19, including requiring that all participants be vaccinated, that all participants produce a negative PCR test result within 3 days of arrival; that everyone is tested within a day of arrival and then every 4 days thereafter. All athletes and officials are also required to remain within the bubble of competition and training venues and their place of accommodation.

Hilary Gladden and Ishmael Castro were selected as flag bearers for the Opening Ceremony on November 25, at a delegation meeting yesterday. The BOCGA noted that they were are the only athletes who will attend the opening ceremony, along with the Chief of Mission, due to the location of their villages of residents and accommodation requirements.
