By Benjamin Flowers: Today the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), hosted its “D’Feet Diabetes”, a 5 kilometers Run/Walk and 10 kilometer Race, to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of exercise.
The event kicked off this morning at the Mae Gordon Park in Belmopan City- through several streets including Bliss Promenade, Hummingbird Avenue, East rng road, and North ring Road, ending back at the Mae Gordon Park.
The event also featured information being disseminated on the dangers of diabetes, activities that can be done to decrease risk factors such as eating a balanced diet and regular physical activity, and Ministry staff on hand checking participants’ blood pressure and blood glucose levels.
Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat was among the participants, in a show of solidarity for the Ministry’s awareness efforts.
Diabetes has consistently been one of the top five leading causes of death in Belize each year, according to data presented by the MOHW. Back in 2019, diabetes was the third-leading cause of death in the country, responsible for 160 deaths.
