Agriculture Ministry training sheep trainers in Sheep/Goat Nutrition Management, Reproductive Biotechnology

Posted: Monday, November 22, 2021. 3:47 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In an effort to drive the sheep and goat industry forward, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) is holding a workshop on Sheep and Goat Nutrition Management and Reproductive Biotechnology at the Aguada Hotel & Restaurant in Santa Elena, Cayo.

Practical sessions on the subject are being held at the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center at Central Farm.

“The objective of the training workshop is to train seed instructors (training of trainers) in Sheep and Goat Nutrition and Feeding Management and Reproductive Biotechnology to impact rearing techniques in sheep and goat production so the productivity of the National Sheep and Goat Industry in Belize may be improved,” said a MAFSE statement on social media.

Two experts from the University of San Carlos, Guatemala are conducting the workshop. MAFSE said the Guatemalan presenters have more than 20 years of experience in sheep and goat reproductive biotechnology using artificial insemination and laparoscopy.

Thirteen persons are participating in the workshop. They include six livestock Extension Officers and one Focal Point representative from MAFSE, one CARDI Technician, two Sheep, and Goat Project technicians, one University of Belize Lecturer, and two sheep and goat farmers.

The workshop was planned under the Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (Sheep and Goat Project II) through Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF).

MAFSE said the training includes methods of Sheep and Goat Rearing, Nutrition Management, Selection, and Reproductive Biotechnology including Artificial Insemination and Laparoscopy. Those topics are complemented by demonstrations and practical sessions on sheep and goat semen collection, straw preparation and elaboration both fresh and frozen in liquid nitrogen, and artificial insemination in synchronized ewes using CIRD, prostaglandin and gonadotropin hormones.
MAFSE said that after the workshop, its Extension Officers will be “expected to engage in technical transfer of knowledge and information by training sheep and goat farmers in Belize and the trained Sheep and Goat Project technicians will practice his expertise at the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center at Central Farm with the help of the Focal Point person”.
