By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, has granted 45 nursing scholarships to young, promising Belizeans. The scholarships were officially handed over during a ceremony on Thursday, November 18, 2021.
In attendance were personnel from both ministries including Ministers Michel Chebat and Francis Fonseca. Thirty Practical Nursing Scholarships were, for the first time, given by the Ministry of Health which is taking significant steps to increase the number of trained Belizean nurses; the other 15 are in the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) program, both at the University of Belize. The total cost of the scholarships is around $237,000 annually in tuition and fees.
Minister Chebat hailed the participants as “heroes” and committed that this was the start of remedying long-established neglect and giving the profession the worth it has earned during the pandemic and long before that.
The development of human capital is key considering the current shortage and neglect by previous administrations; his Ministry of Health intended, he said, to create partnerships to show the worth of becoming a nurse and doing good for society.
Education Minister Fonseca addressed the scholarship recipients, telling them that they were preparing to join a proud, distinguished profession, and while these investments in education and training are not cheap, they are important.
