By BBN Staff: A Belize City man may unknowingly be indebted to the Magistrate’s Court after he was found guilty and fined in his absence.
Gilbert Alvarez reportedly had a case before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, to answer to a State of Emergency violation of failure to wear a face mask.
Since he was not in court, he could not defend himself, but the case proceeded and Prosecutor Sergeant. Christopher Smith had called one witness, PC Young who testify to catching Alvarez not wearing his mask.
Alvarez was fined $750 for the offense and has until December 31 to pay or he will face six months in jail for default.
