By Aaron Humes: The open dissension between members of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Board of Directors and Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat led one prominent member, Dr. Fernando Cuellar, to resign after the Minister challenged the hospital to “step up” regarding payment of its expenses.
But the hurt feelings among other members were resolved when the Ministry agreed to pay $1.5 million to assist with COVID-related expenses, the cheque for which was handed over at a ceremony on Thursday.
According to the Ministry, it pays $26 million in subventions for the semi-autonomous institution and has also paid for more than $3 million in pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
The Minister told reporters that after speaking with the chairman and vice-chairman of the Board, it was agreed that the hospital would submit a 60-day forecast of items needed for procurement to be supplied by the Ministry.
As for the remaining $3.5 million the Ministry owes, Board Chairman Andre Sosa told Channel 7 News that the $1.5 million was a result of their negotiations and has requested a schedule from the Ministry as to the disbursement of the remaining balance, continuing talks. He added that the hospital has its records of requests for daily, weekly, and monthly supplies “all the way to the top.”
