By Aaron Humes: Police have issued a notice of intended prosecution to one of the drivers involved in Monday afternoon’s deadly four-vehicle pileup between Miles 10 and 11 on the George Price Highway.
10-month-old Abdul Smith, and Tiffara Hall, 43, died of their injuries, while Golda Reynolds, the driver and Abdul’s mother, is hospitalized with minor injuries to the shoulder, and complained of pain in the left leg. They are all of Hydes Lane, Belize City.
According to police, truck driver Jarib Romero was driving west toward Belmopan behind the Geo Prizm being driven by Golda Reynolds, who was being accompanied by baby Abdul Smith and her friend Tiffara Hall.
Police say Romero was trying to overtake Reynolds’ vehicle but then saw a third truck driven by Leonel Cabanas coming from the opposite direction.
Romero swerved and slightly swiped Reynolds’ Prizm, sending her into the protective railing and overtaking her, but his rear wheel hooked up with Cabanas’ left front wheel.
Reynolds’ vehicle spun as she lost control and went into the other lane in front of a fourth trailer driven by Carlos Ariaza, t-boning and causing the fatalities.
Police investigations continue.
