By BBN Staff: A man from Rhaburn Ridge Village, Belize District, was handed prison time this week after he pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed weapon and ammunition in a bid to ensure that his common-law wife, the mother of his five children, was not charged.
Twenty-six-year-old Moses Garcia and 27-year-old Mary Leanna Santos appeared unrepresented in court with respect to a .22 caliber Marlin model 60 brand rifle along with nine .22 caliber cartridges found at their home during a search.
Garcia wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the charge, which allowed Santos to go free. He had hoped to receive a fine, however, given the offense is firearm-related, he was handed a three-year prison sentence for the rifle and nine months for the ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently, so he will only have to serve a total of three years.
We understand that the family is now seeking legal advice in hopes of getting Garica’s case appealed and a fine be imposed instead of prison time. The family is also hoping to get the matter resolved quickly to have Garcia home for Christmas.
