Ministry of Agriculture to study rising cost of living, recommend action on price gouging

By Aaron Humes: Wonder why prices are going up, it seems, every minute, every hour, every day?

Wonder why plantain noh di eat like rice?

The Government is wondering too, and it wants to find out.

Cabinet has instructed Jose Mai’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise to study the rising cost of living.

Belize imports many critical products and foodstuffs including fuel but does produce basic staples including fruit and vegetables. However, recently even prices for these have gone up.

One culprit could be price gouging – taking extra profit from otherwise ordinary increases in prices.

Cabinet has instructed the Minister to introduce, at the forthcoming sitting of the House of Representatives, legislation establishing and ensuring legal mechanisms in place against those accused of price gouging.
