Paid Contribution: Yesterday, Prime Minister John Briceño went on record to say that the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Health and Wellness Deysi Mendez is leaving her post.
The news took the nation by storm and it was met with much speculation as to ‘what is really happening in that ministry’? Many are on the attack against the head of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Michel Chebat, questioning his leadership and whether or not he is at fault for what the Prime Minister referred to as a “case where the relationship between the CEO and the Minister has not been the best and so what has been decided”.
While the minister is receiving the brunt of the force brought down by public opinion, there are other sides to the story. According to reports coming out of the Ministry of Health, the CEO has allegedly been overwhelmed with her duties within the ministry for some time now.
These reports are backed up with remarks made by the president of the Public Service Union, Dean Flowers who, on SUN UP 7 and repeated on Channel 7 News on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, said that the CEO “lacked the skills and the leadership qualities to step forward as the accounting officer and address the difficulties that are going on in there”.
As one would imagine, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is one of the most important ministries at this moment as they wage a war against the COVID-19 pandemic and other looming health crises. That is topped with the transitional period switching over from the last administration, to this current administration.
In addition, the workload is heavier than usual at the Ministry of Health & Wellness and so it is understandable that changes had to be implemented to ensure that the Ministry moves forward.
