By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Though the Venezuelan government has been criticized by countries in the region, the Belize Elections and Boundaries Commission said in a statement issued on Friday that it is satisfied with the Venezuela elections it recently attended as an observer.
“We found the electoral process efficient and the automated system of voting secure and convenient for voters to freely exercise the right to vote, and effective in avoiding discrepancies, fraud, and unfairness,” said the BEBC.
The BEBC’s delegation joined representatives from 55 other countries as part of the International Oversight Plan that observed the election in the South American country from November 14 to 20.
The BEBC said it was invited by the president of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council to participate as international observers for the Municipal and Regional elections held on November 21.
According to the BEBC “in all polling stations, it was observed that the electors who voted did so in a peaceful, orderly, and democratic manner free from strife and political conflict or violence”.
“The participation of the opposition, with attendant witnesses representing opposition parties at each polling station, was a progressive development for the people and country of Venezuela.”
The BEBC said the Municipal and Regional Elections “took place after intense political dialogue between the national government of Venezuela and diverse sectors of the opposition”.
Over 20 million registered voters participated in the elections contested by 87 political parties fielding 70,000 candidates. The BEBC said the Venezuelan elections required approximately 14,000 polling stations, 30,000 electoral tables, and approximately one and a half million election workers.
The Belize Elections and Boundaries Commission said it appreciates the opportunity to witness and participate in Venezuela’s democratic elections.
“We congratulate the people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on the level of maturity and peace displayed during election day while exercising their right to vote. We hope for continued success and advancement in Venezuela’s electoral process,” said the Belize Elections and Boundaries Commission.
