By Aaron Humes: Two years ago the New River was the subject of much talk after a combination of years of dumping and an ongoing drought led to a foul stench sickening citizens.
Some of the blame was placed on leading industrial giant Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) for not properly treating its waste from factory operations.
In collaboration with the Department of the Environment (DOE) and others, the company has commissioned a state of the art water cooling and waste treatment facility overlooking the New River.
Seven treatment ponds collect water and waste products from sugar operations and effluent, treat it and discharge the safe result into the River.
The DOE says BSI’s work is part of its overall plan to monitor and improve conditions on the waterway, including mapping its depths to find and deal with other problem areas and educating small businesses and schools on the value of the River.
The DOE also says it plans to restore the 66-foot buffer zone along the river with natural vegetation.
