BREAKING: Cane crop to begin as temporary agreement reached

Posted: Saturday, November 27, 2021. 10:22 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: After a meeting with the leadership of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) and Prime Minister John Briceño and Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai, a temporary agreement will be negotiated and signed with Belize Sugar Industries Limited allowing time for more negotiation and more importantly, the start of the 2021-22 cane season.

An official letter to the Prime Minister seen by Breaking Belize News states that BSCFA commits to starting the crop in December contingent on an interim one-year agreement between it and BSI to allow its members to deliver cane.

BSI and BSCFA are well apart on their initial positions on a new commercial agreement (the old one expires in January). But the Association, which still holds over 50 percent of the membership of cane farmers in the industry, commits to continued negotiations between December 2021 and June 2022 which it expects will result in an agreement acceptable to both sides.

More on this later.
