By Benjamin Flowers: On Sunday, November 28, the international observance of Disability Week 2021 was celebrated with a special mass held at St. Martin de Porres Church in Belize City. The initiative, being held under the theme “Powered by Inclusion, Am I in your Village?” continues with a number of virtual events planned up to Saturday, December 4.

This year’s events are being coordinated by the Ministry of Human Development, Families & Indigenous People’s Affairs via the Disability Desk under the auspices of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Mrs. Rosanna Briceno

The events seen below are geared towards emphasizing the necessity for inclusion and community support and also encourages others to learn about how they can be involved in making Belize truly inclusive for people living with disabilities.

The main highlight of the week is the National Disability Conference, a virtual set for Tuesday, November 30, which be live-streamed on The Ministry of Human Development’s Facebook, participating agencies, and local TV.

Marshall Nunez, Disability Desk Coordinator with the Ministry, explained that the conference will be the first of its kind for Belize, as local and international stakeholders are gathering for the purpose of developing policies that will inform future legislation geared specifically towards addressing issues for Belizeans with disabilities. Nunez says that the conference follows a tour conducted by the Special Envoy and Disabilities desk, meeting with Belizeans with disabilities across the country, along with their families and communities to learn what their concerns are.

Nunez said that the conference will see stakeholders team up to “represent the approximately 18 percent of Belizeans living with a disability and to work toward true inclusion in our Belizean society.”
