By Hugh O’Brien: The ban on the sale of liquor by stores, supermarkets or any other licensed establishment, after 6 in the evening and up to 4 am has been lifted by the Government of Belize. The new Statutory Instrument (ie. SI No. 149 of 2021) was gazetted on 29th November but lifted the ban on the sale of liquor with effect from Friday, November 26, 2021.
On October 13, 2021, Statutory Instrument No. 119 of 2021 was signed into law, and disallowed the selling of liquor at licensed establishments other than restaurants, in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19 via public drinking and private parties.
The decision to lift the ban is not yet widely known as numerous stores and supermarkets are still not allowing the purchase of liquor after 6 in the evening.
