By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “I wish Barbados well as she continues on her path and I pray BELIZE will soon realize her true Independence and Sovereignty by removing the Queen of England as head of our State and closing the door on this dark past of imperialism and colonial atrocities,” said Mesopotamia representative Shyne Barrow on social media as he congratulated Barbados on becoming a republic today, November 30, 2021, after 55 years of independence from the United Kingdom.
Sandra Mason, who up to yesterday was the Governor-General representing the Queen of England, is now the head of state replacing Queen Elizabeth.
“I am extremely proud of our sister Nation Barbados who has rightfully removed the last remnant of any connection to the monarchy and its colonial past which as the Prince of Wales himself concedes was an atrocious period in history,” Barrow added.
“From the darkest days of our past and the appalling atrocities of slavery which forever stains our history,” Barrow quoted from Prince Charles’ remarks at the republic ceremony at midnight in Bridgetown.
“This is true Independence, true self-determination, and true Sovereignty,” said Barrow.
Mia Mottley, who remains as Prime Minister and head of government, convinced parliamentarians to change Barbados from a constitutional monarchy to a parliamentary republic.
