Taiwan Embassy presents US$108,000 to Ministry of Agriculture for Sheep and Goat Project

By RubΓ©n Morales Iglesias: The Taiwan Embassy presented the second disbursement of US$108,000 to the Ministry of Agriculture for Sheep and Goat Project on Monday, November 29.

The Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) David Kuan-Chou Chien presented the funds to Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, for the improvement of the Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project. According to a joint statement, the Sheep and Goat Project is β€œone of the significant cooperation projects between Belize and Taiwan”.

β€œThis is a tangible sign of commitment to the agreement between Taiwan International Cooperation Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise on the cooperation to improve the sheep and goat industry in Belize,” said the statement.

The funds will be used by the Sheep and Goat Project (SGP) for several improvements

Firstly, the SGP will expand the infrastructure at the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center at Central Farm by modernizing a conveyor belt system to remove waste from under the raised barn floor.

Secondly, the SGP will drill a backup well with an irrigation pumping system, so the breeding center has a consistent water supply year-round, particularly during the dry season.

Thirdly, the SGP will be able to upgrade the standardized goat compartments in a second barn it is constructing. It is hoped these enhancements assist in ensuring better management and robust development of the recently imported goats.

The statement said the Sheep and Goat Project will also strengthen its marketing component to increase market linkages and will hold capacity-building exercises such as workshops and field days. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) expects that the SGP will be able to further train extension officers, technicians, and farmers β€œto continue to improve their knowledge and skills in sheep and goat rearing techniques, improving productivity”.

MAFSE thanked the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its continued support and collaboration in improving the sheep and goat industry in Belize. For its part, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) reiterates that, as a trustworthy and faithful ally, β€œit looks forward to continuing to work with the Government of Belize β€œin improving the sheep and goat industry in Belize, and, among the other subjects, to further advancing the welfare of Belizean people.
