By BBN Staff: On the night of Saturday, November 28, police detained six men in the vicinity of a suspected drug plane in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve. The men, now referred to as the Hidden Valley Six, claim they were hunting at the time, but Police Commissioner Chester Williams says he’s not accepting their explanation.
Today, Williams briefed the media on the status of the ongoing investigation, saying he was “appalled” that the situation was reported by some media houses in the light that the men were, in fact, hunting game in the area, and posted pictures of the men on previous hunting trips with animals caught while hunting.
“How irresponsible to suggest that because these men in the past had been hunters, that on that particular night, they were hunting game,” Williams said. “Yes, maybe in the past they were hunters, but on that particular night they were hunting perhaps one thing, cocaine…”
Williams said that the fact that the men had previously been out hunting made them an asset for nacro traffickers because of their intimate knowledge of the terrain.
The six men (five civilians and a police officer) were caught by police with a number of shotguns and shotgun cartridges, a handgun, and an assault rifle. They have all been charged with conspiracy to land a drug plane, and Williams says they will now be additionally charged for importing cocaine into Belize.
