Police department to destroy over 1,500 pounds of cocaine

By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department is preparing to destroy over 20 bales of cocaine which was recovered following a narco plane landing in the Cayo district on Saturday night.

Today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams gave an update on the investigation, noting that police were in the Hidden Valley Area of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, continuously since Saturday, and based on information they had received, they unearthed 22.5 bales containing a total of 514 bricks. The drugs, which were in packages bearing the Apple logo, weighed in at just over 700 kilos (1,543 pounds).

“The suspected cocaine was removed from the area yesterday, has been processed, and is now being kept pending destruction,” Williams said.

Police also found a grey Toyota Hilux which belonged to the wife of one of the Mennonites who they believe is involved in the plane landing. The vehicle is believed to be the one used to transport the pilot of the aircraft out of the area. That Mennonite has been charged with five other men, one of them a police officer, with respect to the plane landing.

Police are putting the evidence together, and since the content of the aircraft was found, they will be additionally charged for conspiracy to import cocaine into the country, while the pilot will be charged for importing the cocaine into Belize.
