One year later, Belize secures hurricane relief funds for Eta/Iota disaster

Posted: Thursday, December 2, 2021. 11:43 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: One year ago, unprecedented flooding in the central districts of Belize as well as in primary productive areas caused by the one-two punch of hurricanes Eta and Iota cost an estimated $50 million worth of damage.

The previous administration immediately began implementing repairs which were continued by the current administration, and now Belize is in a position to put emergency funding asked for at the time to use.

Cabinet this week recommended the introduction of a Loan Motion at the Sitting of the House of Representatives on Friday for a US$2.5 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank to assist the government with the financing of emergency restoration of critical infrastructure as a result of damages caused by the hurricanes.

We expect to hear more on exactly what it will be used for at that time.
