Christmas Cheer after all?

Posted: Friday, December 3, 2021. 7:45 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Last night we told you that it looked like there would be no Christmas cheer for constituents, at least not from the Government of Belize.

But hold your reindeer because according to Prime Minister John Briceño, they will be doing things slightly differently this year.

In an interview, the Prime Minister explained, “…the Cabinet has decided and we will take it to the house, is to be able to augment the assistance that we do through the community development program and under the community development program we are going to increase significantly the amount of monies for all the constituencies, including the UDP constituencies. Everybody is going to get the same amount based on the number of voters, just like what we do with the community development we do monthly but we are going to increase it substantially.”

He added, “…we’re taking to the house for debate and for approval and I hope that the Opposition would also give us the support but that monies will be used to help people with food or help them fix their little house, that kind of thing because we’re going through a very hard time right now and we need to find a way as the government to try to see how we could help. So it’s not about the parties and to throw away money but to how we can give some kind of help to people that need help especially during a time when we suppose to be happy and celebrating and counting our blessings as Belizeans and so we want to do our part.”

Opposition Leader Patrick Faber has already indicated there would be no opposition from him or the UDP, but we’ll see if he sticks to that when the House meets later this morning.
