By BBN Staff: On Tuesday of last week the Supplies Control Unit announced that the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), locally known as “butane”, was being reduced significantly by 30 cents per gallon or 9 cents per pound. Belizean consumers are therefore paying 9 dollars less for a hundred-pound cylinder of ‘butane’ with effect from Wednesday, December 1, 2021.
The LPG Act as amended inter alia provides for energy security, quality assurance, and transparent prices by means of a legislated pricing methodology. The recent decrease in the acquisition price of LPG in the US Gulf Coast is consequently reflected in a concurrent decrease in the local regulated LPG price in Belize and hence the legislated price reductions by the Supplies Control Unit.
The reduction in LPG or ‘butane’ prices could not have come at a better time for Belizeans as they prepare for the upcoming Christmas celebrations.
On a per gallon basis, the new prices are as follows: $4.43 per gallon wholesale, $6.03 per gallon retail in the municipalities, and $6.13 in the rural areas.
Since most are used to measuring by the pound, in urban areas, the price is now $1.38 per pound, and in rural areas it is $1.40. With the $9 per tank reduction, a typical hundred-pound cylinder now costs $138 dollars in urban areas and $140 in rural areas.
