Belize Sugar Industries Limited/ASR not committed to extending current commercial agreement

By Aaron Humes: Vice-president for International Relations for American Sugar Refining Mac Maclachlan has reiterated that his company’s investments in Belize’s sugar industry have set a foundation for the future, something for which he says they have not gotten enough credit.

The millers met with Prime Minister John Briceño and Agriculture Minister Jose Mai yesterday at which they reiterated that it will take more than simply extending the current commercial agreement to start the season while continuing to negotiate.

The current impasse, McLachlan revealed, has “disappointed” the investors although he cautioned that he could not speak for them specifically.
