By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Brazilian soccer idol Pelé is hospitalized for chemotherapy treatment of a colon tumor, said CNN.
“He is in stable condition and expected to be released in the next few days,” said a spokesperson at the Sao Paulo Albert Einstein Hospital to CNN.
In September, Pelé, who led Brazil to World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970, had a tumor removed from his colon.
“When the path is difficult, celebrate each step of the journey,” Pele wrote on social media on September 30 as he was leaving the hospital.
“Focus on your happiness. It’s true that I can’t jump anymore, but these past few days, I’ve been punching the air more times than usual.
“I want to thank the entire Albert Einstein Hospital team, who made my stay a pleasant one, with a humane and very affectionate welcome.
“Thanks also to all of you, who from afar, make my life complete with so many messages of love.”
Then, on November 17, the 81-year-old Brazilian legend made another post on his social media accounts saying he was well.
“I want to let you know that I’m fine. I feel better every day,” Pelé wrote. “I don’t think even the mask for my protection can hide my happiness. Thank you very much to all of you who send me good energy daily.”
FIFA named Pelé as its Player of the Century, along with Argentina’s Diego Maradona, in 2000, who he remembered on November 25, one year after Maradona’s passing.
Previously, Pelé has had hip surgery.
