Immigration discusses how asylum seekers will be handled

Posted: Wednesday, December 8, 2021. 8:35 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Persons seeking asylum and status as refugees will not be absolved of their legal responsibility to register with Belizean authorities ahead of next year’s amnesty program, the Immigration Department asserted.

As we have reported, some 4 thousand persons with refugee status and seeking asylum will benefit from the forthcoming amnesty program. Refugees are classed as those who involuntarily leave their homes and are generally unable to return, mostly due to personal or other forms of persecution.

As outlined by Director of the Refugee Department Maria Marin, “There will be specific requirements for those persons who are here as asylum seekers for them to actually qualify for the amnesty…they need to come to the Refugee Department for us to issue them a letter that indicates that indeed they have been registered as asylum seekers, that they are in the country for whatever period of time, and that basically they have gone through the process at the Refugee Department without yet having been recognized as a refugee.”
