By BBN Staff: Winston Joseph James also known as Tanga who became popular after a number of videos of two women verbally battling over him went viral on social media, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, jointly charged with his pregnant girlfriend, 19-year-old, Erica Armstrong on drugs and firearms offenses.
James and Armstrong were facing charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to supply, and possession of illegal ammunition. Armstrong had initially pleaded guilty to the drugs offenses but later changed her plea to not guilty. With them both pleading not guilty to the drug offenses, James pleaded guilty to the illegal ammunition (five live .9mm rounds), allowing Armstrong to walk free of that charge.
Attorney representing James, Orson Elrington, explained that he made a submission requesting that the court consider imposing a fine instead of prison time, given the fact that James is the sole breadwinner for his family and has medical conditions that would prove life-threatening if he were to go to prison.
The court accepted the submission and James was fined $1,500.00 for the guilty plea which was accepted after he agreed with the facts as read out in court. He was ordered to pay forthwith or face a year in jail. He was able to pay his fine.
With respect to the charges over the 235 grams of marijuana found during a police search, they were both offered bail in the sum of $5,000 plus two sureties of $2,500.00 each which they were able to meet. They are due back in court on February 7, 2022.
