Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister meet with BSI reps

Posted: Wednesday, December 8, 2021. 3:54 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has confirmed via social media that he and Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai met on Monday with the leadership of Belize Sugar Industry Limited, and their majority shareholder, American Sugar Refining, Inc.

It is part of efforts to, as he wrote, “discuss the smooth start and roll out of this year’s cane season,” but also in an attempt to break the impasse in the sugar industry before the next crop season starts.

BSI/ASR confirmed today through vice-president for international relations Mac Maclachlan that it is not amenable to the government’s suggestion that both sides should just stick with the existing agreement for another six months until this cane season is finished.

But, BSI/ASR did leave the door open for a possible compromise to be discussed – and plans to contact the BSCFA to set up a further meeting to discuss its counter to their proposal.
