Man fights mask violation case in court and loses, fined $800

By BBN Staff: Despite disputing his charge for failure to properly wear a face mask in court, Belize City resident Keiran Allen lost his case and was fined.

Allen appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson after police say they caught him in the St. Martin de Porres area of Belize City with his mask under his chin instead of covering his nose and mouth. Police further say that when Allen saw the mobile patrol he proceeded to pull the mask up.

In his unsworn statement given to the court, Allen ended up confirming the police allegations in his attempt to refute them.

Allen was fined $800.00 plus a $5.00 cost of court, which he needs to pay by April 8, 2022, or he will spend three months in jail for defaulting.
