Prime Minister John Briceño discusses establishment of project to finance protected areas with World Wildlife Fund

Posted: Thursday, December 9, 2021. 6:34 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Prime Minister John Briceño said he discussed the establishment of project to finance protected areas with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

“Today, World Wildlife Fund representatives and I continued a discussion to establish a process towards realizing a PFP (Project Finance for Permanence) to benefit Belize and our varied protected areas,” said the Prime Minister on social media.

“The general purpose is to facilitate fund development for the continued management of protected areas and conservation in Belize.”

The Prime Minister said the WWF has executed similar cooperation projects in Costa Rica and Bhutan and is working on an initiative to protect a portion of the Amazon in Brazil.

“Our discussions first started earlier this year when I attended the UNGA and met with the leads of World Wildlife Fund. We look forward to continued work in early next year towards realizing the PFP,” said Prime Minister Briceño.
