BWS says vaccines do work; 99% of employees are vaccinated against COVID-19

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize Water Services (BWS) said that 99.3% of its employees are vaccinated against COVID-19.

Of the 403 employees, 400 have been vaccinated. Of that number, 389 are now fully vaccinated; 96.5% of the total.

“As an essential service provider, Belize Water Services (BWS) is focused on ensuring the continued reliability and safety of our water and wastewater systems for our customers, as well as the health and safety of our employees,” said a BWS statement.

“We commend our employees for this high level of vaccination uptake and for recognizing that water and wastewater services are a key component to public health, especially given the pandemic,” said the statement.

“A reliable continuous supply of potable water is essential in homes, workplaces, schools, and even more so, to hospitals and health care facilities. It is therefore critical for BWS staff with their specialized skills to remain healthy in order to keep our facilities and our services operating for the protection of public health.”

BWS said their employees were saddened when they lost a coworker to COVID-19 early in pandemic and recognize that “vaccines are the single most effective tool to protect our staff, their families, and our communities against COVID-19 virus”.

BWS said that the BWS Board pushed for their employees to be vaccinated as soon as vaccines were made available.

“To date, BWS has had 77 employees who have tested positive for the virus,” said the statement. “We are pleased to report that none of these employees became critically ill or had to be hospitalized; in fact, they have been cleared to return to work in fairly short time spans. This provides statistical proof that the vaccines work.”

BWS said that the vaccines add one more layer of protection against infection of their employees and ensuring protection is a team effort.

“BWS employees are issued a “fully Vaccinated” pin as soon as they submit their confirmation – they wear it with pride!” said the statement. “Thank you, BWS Employees.”
