Newly elected David “Dido” Vega and his death from COVID-19 – One year later

By Aaron Humes: The inauguration of the National Assembly on this day a year ago was struck by devastating news from Belize City.

Recently elected area representative for Corozal Bay, David “Dido” Vega, passed earlier in the morning, and would not be joining his colleagues to be sworn into office.

A moment of silence was marked and new area representatives remembered their colleague as someone who worked hard and was determined to see success for the Bay.

Vega, 47, a teacher, had been diagnosed a few days earlier and saw his condition rapidly deteriorate, but there was a brief rally before he ultimately passed on.

Sister Elvia Vega Samos took up the baton and won the by-election held in March, reversing a trend of success for the United Democratic Party in such by-elections.

His now widow Ingrid recovered from her own bout with COVID-19 and has been public in her advocacy.

On the anniversary of this sad day we extend our best wishes to the Vega family and all who knew Dido. May he continue to rest in peace.
