Tony Rocha makes history – first Belizean to win United States MLS Championship, congratulated by the FFB

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) has congratulated Tony Rocha, the first Belizean to win the United States Major League Soccer (MLS) championship.

Rocha’s team, New York City FC (NYCFC), on Saturday won the MLS Cup 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout over then homestanding Portland Timbers in Portland after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes of play.

“The Football Federation of Belize takes this opportunity to congratulate Tony Rocha and his club the New York City FC for claiming the championship title in the Major League Soccer Cup,” wrote the FFB on Facebook

“It’s always a great day when Belize is represented on the big screen!! FFB congratulates you Tony Rocha! Thanks for representing the jewel.”

After the match, Rocha celebrated NYCFC’s first title wrapping himself with the Belize National Flag.

Though Rocha didn’t play in the final, he did play in two playoff games this season.

Rocha left Orlando City three years ago and joined the New York team in December 2018. Since then, he has played in 36 games for NYCFC.

Rocha who was born in Spring, Texas, has dual citizenship and has represented Belize with the Belize Men’s National Football Team (BMNT). He has three caps with the national team since being called in September 2019.

The only other Belizean to have played in the MLS is Mike Salazar who suited up for the Montreal Impact and Houston Dynamo. Salazar now plays in the United States Soccer League (USL) for Memphis 901.
