By Aaron Humes: Belize has reaffirmed its strong and enduring ties with Taiwan.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration, Senator Eamon Courtenay, met with Ambassador David Kuan-Chiou Chien of Taiwan to, inter alia, reiterate Belize’s steadfast commitment to bilateral relations with Taiwan and its solidarity with the Government and People of Taiwan.
The move comes after last week’s shift by Nicaragua to recognizing the People’s Republic of China, leaving Taiwan with just 14 allies worldwide, about half of those in the Caribbean and the Americas.
Taiwan provides monetary budget support as well as support for projects in agriculture, education, e-governance, culture, and many others.
Taiwan’s Embassy in Belize thanked Belize for its staunch support and true friendship, noting “it matters tremendously to us.”
