Dr. Victor Gongora heads Veterinary Association of Belize

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Dr. Victor Gongora was elected President of the Veterinary Association of Belize (VAB) at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at the Cahal Pech Village Resort in San Ignacio, according to a press release by the VAB.

The other members of the executive committee elected at the AGM are vice president Dr. Ludwig Palacio, secretary Dr. Fabian Tun, treasurer Dr. Isabelle Paquet Durand, and ordinary members Dr. Mia Canton and Dr. Philip DeShield.

Dr. Gongora is also the president of the Caribbean Veterinary Medical Association (CbVMA) and will be replaced by Dr. Palacio, who is now the president-elect.

The AGM also noted that Belize was selected to host the CbVMA biennial conference in 2023.

The statement said the VAB members expressed their appreciation to Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai “for showing strong political will to support animal health and production in Belize”.

According to the VAB, Minister Mai recently appointed a new Veterinary Surgeons Board which is to serve a three-year term. He also signed into law the pre-requisite for annual registration by veterinarians and animal health assistants, who will now also be required to ensure continuing professional development.

The statement concluded that the future of animal health and production in Belize looks quite promising, “as the association strengthens its leadership role in the Caribbean and globally, expands its membership to include animal health assistants, and advocates for ethics and professionalism in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery in Belize”.
