By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mireny Santos, a 12-year-old from Las Flores, Belmopan, in the Cayo District, has been named UNICEF Art Ambassador. Santos is an art student at Raquel-ART art school in Belmopan.

According to Raquel Rodriguez, founder of Raquel-ART, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) approached her looking for a young active artist to do a painting for UNICEFs 75th Anniversary and she recommended Santos. Rodriguez said Santos did two paintings and impressed UNICEF so much that the United Nations body asked her to be one of their Art Ambassadors.

Mireny Santos and Rodriguez were invited to attend the UNICEF 75th anniversary gala where Mireny presented her paintings entitled Upliftment and Puzzles Pieces.

Puzzle Pieces is every piece that UNICEF has done for the children in Belize.

“Upliftment is a painting that (shows) the balloon of UNICEF holding up every kid in Belize … of every culture. Puzzle Pieces is every piece that UNICEF has done for the children in Belize,” said Mireny at the UNICEF gala.

“Mireny received the highest acknowledgment from an organization! UNICEF s newest Art Ambassador and making us so proud representing CAYO!!!!” wrote Rodriguez in a statement.

“Mireny is a daughter of a single mom from Las Flores in Belmopan. Mireny comes from a family of seven siblings and has always had a tough life,” said Rodriguez. “She overcame this by being a part of our school on a scholarship provided by some great people!”

“Mireny is the only female child and eldest of 7. She is a standard 6 student and has been using her art to help her community,” says a UNICEF stand-up poster.

“Painting is her only form of peace and escape. Mireny paints because it gives her peace and teaches her patience. It relaxes and clears her mind. It allows her to express herself and her feeling using colors.”

According to Rodriguez, through her art school, Raquel-ART, which caters to the children of the Belmopan area, she has been “pushing local kids to being art entrepreneurs and activists in our community”.

“We have been part of some great initiatives with City Council and Minister of Education and Culture Francis Fonseca one of which was our beautiful mural (at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium)!” Rodriguez said.

The Raquel-ART school has also done painting in other parts of Belmopan.

UNICEF founded in 1947 is charged with improving children’s lives worldwide.

“UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. And we never give up,” says UNICEF on its website.
