Raquel-ART students host painting initiative for almost 100 children of Belmopan to decorate Christmas Tree

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “It’s Christmas and we are giving back. Yesterday we had over 100 kids. We gave them the ornaments to make. It was great!” said Raquel Rodriguez of Raquel-ART school in Belmopan as she led an initiative in which she involved children of the capital in painting ornaments to decorate the Belmopan Christmas Tree.

“I asked the Belmopan City Council if it was possible for us to hang ornaments on the tree. We made 500 ornaments.”

Rodriguez and her students led the children in showing them how to prime up the round pieces of wood with white paint and then when the wood was dry, they showed them how to paint over the white background whatever messages or decorations they wanted.

“We cut up some firesticks, we drilled holes in them. We made 500. The kids painted Christmas messages on them, and the kids loved it,” she said.

After painting the decorations, the children put strings through the holes and personally hung the decorations on the Christmas tree.

Raquel-Art have been quite active in Belmopan. They painted a mural at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, they went on a painting decoration at the Police Training Academy, and have other projects planned said Rodriguez.
