Approximately $700,000 in cattle to be exported to Mexico

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Over 750 head of cattle with an overall value of approximately $700,000 are to be exported to Mexico between today and next Tuesday.

“Cattle exports to Mexico continue. On Thursday, 16th of December, a total of 291 bovines or 139,942.08 lbs. will be exported to Mexico,” said Belarmino Esquivel, Principal Agriculture Office and Livestock Director at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

Today’s shipment is valued at approximately $260,000.

As usual, the Mexican animal health authority, Senasica, sent their veterinary inspectors to ensure the cattle is in good condition.

“Only 3 bovines did not meet export requirements,’” said Esquivel. “The reinspection of bovines at Kakabish went well for the first three truckloads. As you know, one tick can delay the process. We have taken measures to mitigate, as much as possible, the incidence of ticks but the probability is always there. But, with measures in place, we want that probability to be minimal.”

“This will bring the total exports to a cumulative of 2,395 bovines officially exported to Mexico since 2020 when the cattle trade (with Mexico) initiated.”

With that, the grand total of income for Belize moves up to approximately $2,175,000 from cattle exports to Mexico.

But that number is expected to rise to approximately $2,600,000 by next week as two more shipments are coming up on Friday and Tuesday.

“If the inspection goes well for the next batch, we expect to have another three truckloads to be exported on Friday, 17th of December,” said Esquivel.

He added that it’s expected 270 head will be exported on Friday and another 190 on Tuesday, for a total of approximately 750 head of cattle in the span of a week, and a grand total of 2855 since September 2020.
